Hello Augustin, can you tell us about your background ?

My name is Augustin, I am a singer/songwriter in the band Jahneration that I co-created with a childhood friend more than 10 years ago. Not knowing what to do after my baccalaureate, I chose ESCE to broaden my horizons and travel during these 5 years.

My band continued to develop as time went by and during my last year of school we signed with the label Ovastand which allowed us to go on tour for the first time and produce a first album.

The year 2016 was thus placed under the sign of balancing: between internship and thesis but also weekends on the road to make concerts and first album to compose and record... Once the diploma of the school in pocket, the choice was not difficult to take. The first tour we did in parallel with this last year went well, so we logically continued in this way and we haven't stopped developing the project since!

What attracted you to the music business ?

The reason why I went into music is simply because it has always spoken to me since I was a kid, and it all came together at the right time. The fact that we are signing with the label at this very moment, the fact that my colleague is graduating at the same time as me, the fact that we like the tour, the fact that the public reacts positively... I knew I wanted to work in the music business no matter what (I had done my internship in a digital music distribution company) and we had already started to lay the first stones of a solid project in 2016.

It would have been too stupid to go for a "traditional" job when all the signs were green for us.

What did ESCE bring to you in the construction of this project ?

ESCE gave me a lot and I don't regret having done the school at all! Travelling allowed me to open up and actively improve my English: as we sing in this language, it was a real objective for me. I was able to make a real group of friends who are all different and now work in very different fields. I know that I will always be able to talk to them both personally and professionally for a long time!

Secondly, understanding the workings of the business and, more importantly, the music industry through my last internship, has allowed me to be more clear-sighted about the choices we are still required to make today.

I'm not just a performer, Jahneration is an independent band, so it's a real small company where everyone has several hats.

For example, on the creation of an album, our manager, my colleague and I make all the decisions together: choice of recording/production partners, which company will distribute the record and in what way, which marketing strategies we will use to promote the record, which communication operations we will use, etc. My master's degree in marketing obviously allowed me to already have experience and not to feel lost when dealing with all these subjects.

Do you have any advice for ESCE Alumni ?

I don't have any specific advice to give other than to follow your heart and what you really like!

Doing a Master's degree over 5 years has a cost, and starting to work as a freelance artist just after graduation was not easy to explain to my parents either... I'm happy all the same to have been able to acquire all this knowledge, especially in marketing, which is useful to me today and the moral is that school leads to everything! There is not only one path and I am an example of this :)

We'll be (hopefully) at the Olympia on October 9th! We're still in the dark but we'll see how it goes!
